FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)
The road to recovery can be a difficult experience for any patient. At
Butler Physical Therapy we make every effort to provide a careful, smooth journey. The following are frequently asked questions
regarding Physical Therapy:
|
What should I expect during my initial visit?
To initiate a program of physical therapy, the physical therapist examines the patient. This includes obtaining a patient history,
performing relevant systems reviews, and selecting and administering specific tests and measurements to obtain data.
|
Explain what you mean by examine?
We call this exam an evaluation, making clinical judgements based on the data gathered during the examination.
|
What type of data is the PT looking for?
During an examination, the PT performs tests and measurements that provide information about the status of the musculoskeletal,
neurological, pulmonary, and cardiovascular systems, and the individual's functional independence.
|
Exactly what type of tests will be performed?
The PT may administer any of the following tests:
- Motor Function Exams - to assess an individual's ability to
learn or demonstrate the skillful and efficient assumption, maintenance, modification, and control of voluntary postures and
movement patterns.
- Muscle Performance Exams - to assess strength, power and endurance and to determine an individual's ability to produce movements
that are
prerequisites for functional activity.
- Gait & Balance Exams - to assess disturbances in gait and balance that may lead to decline of mobility and functional
independence or an increased incidence of falls.
- Neuromotor Development & Sensory Integration Exams - to assess motor capabilities, including evolution of movement skills and
abilities across the life span.
- Functional Capacity or Endurance Exams - to measure the ability to perform work or participate in activities over time, and to
indicate the degree and severity of impairment and functional limitation.
|
How long will my appointment be?
You should allow approximately 1 1/2 hours for your first visit. Subsequent visits will probably run 45-60 minutes.
|
What should I wear?
All exams are private. Loose-fitting, comfortable clothing is recommended. You may want to wear or bring shorts if we are treating
an ankle or knee. Modest swim wear is recommended for the Aquatic Therapy program. (Patient gowns and gym shorts are provided when
necessary.)
|
Will my doctor approve of my treatment plan?
Based on the examination findings, diagnosis and prognosis, the PT establishes a plan of care. The plan includes specific
interventions designed to produce changes in the patient's condition in order to achieve the desired outcomes. This "Plan of Care"
is sent to your doctor for approval.
|
In addition to the evaluation, what else will be involved in my treatment?
Physical therapist may use one or a combination of the following interventions to achieve treatment goals:
Therapeutic exercises (including aerobic conditioning)
Functional training in self care and home management
Manual therapy techniques (soft tissue and joint mobilization)
Physical agents, mechanical and/or thermal modalities
Electrotherapeutic modalities
Educational and/or application of assistive, adaptive, and protective devices and equipment

How will I handle my problem at home?
Your physical therapy program will include a home program to be carried out independently. Physical Therapists use patient-related
instruction to educate not only the patient but also families and other care givers when necessary, about the patient's current
condition, treatment plan, and future transition to home, work, or community roles.
